People in across the upper two-thirds of North America are dealing with the frigid cold brought on by the Polar Vortex.
A Polar Vortex is circulation of strong, upper-level winds that normally surround the northern pole in a counter clockwise direction. These winds normally keep the icy air up in the Artic region. However, on occasion, like right now, the vortex can be distorted and dip much farther south than you would normally see.
There are many theories as to the cause of the extreme cold ranging from climate change to a strong immobile jet stream. Whatever the cause, one thing is clear, in most of the country, it is COLD outside.
